African Geese on a Small Farm

A few years ago I got into the whole “hobby farm” thing. I loved the idea of having eggs that came from our own chickens, milk from our own cow, etc. If the idea of having a small farm and self-sufficiency intrigues you- well, let’s just say I know the feeling!

As I started my obsession research, animals started to sporadically pop up at our front door. And they may or may not have arrived there in my car.

Our geese were mail ordered and arrived as goslings when they were just 2 days old. I jokingly called them mini velociraptors because they reminded me of the raptors I had seen in Jurassic Park. Hmm. I like that movie. So, they stood really tall and ran quickly. Very cute.

They’re not goslings anymore! Look at those wings!

I had ordered the goslings with ducklings in a package deal(4 goslings and 6 ducklings) which made the total price less expensive. There was a catch- you would have to be surprised with whatever breed of goose/duck that the hatchery sent you. It took weeks to figure out whether they were African or Toulouse. They are definitely African!

Gerald says, “Nothing to see here, folks. Move it along. Move it along.”

African geese are super loud. They are one of the loudest breeds of geese(if not the loudest.) They actually originate from China, not Africa. In the winter you have to be vigilant because the knobs on their heads are prone to frostbite. That being said, we haven’t had any issues with it in the last 4 winters that we’ve had them here. They do have an enclosed pen which protects them from the wind. That makes a difference.

They are quite beautiful, especially when they are in water. The girls actually just started laying eggs again on Monday. They only lay for a few months and then they’re done. I don’t blame them!

One of these eggs is a goose egg. One of them is a large chicken egg.

Any questions? I didn’t touch on too much here. I think it’s good to do a lot of research if you’re thinking about getting any kind of animal, but there are some things that the books and online resources just don’t prepare you for. Regardless, we enjoy having our farm animals.

I thought I’d also give you an update on my goose that was attacked by a no-good-weasel.:) She seems much better. Her wound has healed pretty nicely. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to trap that stealthy weasel…

Would you like to know more about graceful African geese? Have you had trouble with weasels? Tried a goose egg?

Enjoy your day!!!

A Challenge Update and a Video

Well, hello! I meant to give an update on my declutter challenge yesterday but we’ve been battling a stomach virus here. Whine, whine, whine! We’ve made it through the worst I think, so things are looking up. Phew!

Unfortunately, my box of donations this week is small. I’ll try to make up for that next week, but I can’t make any promises.

Okay- let’s keep this short and sweet.

The Box

The Contents

  • stuffed toy pig
  • stress ball
  • 2 small lotions
  • 8 pairs of shoes

That’s a total of 12 items this week. I may or may not be crying a little. 🙂 Okay, add that to last week’s total of 46 items and we have a grand total of 58! It’s not a bad total for just two weeks, and remember that I’m doing this throughout 2017. So hopefully there will be plenty more.

Friday’s Video

This is the Target Beauty Box for January.

This month Target offered two boxes: a $5.00 box and a $10.00 box. I purchased the $5.00 box and made a video so you can compare the contents of it to the Walmart Beauty Box that Beks made a video for just a few days ago. The box from Walmart is also $5.00. Nice comparison!

Which box did you like better this time around? Have you been decluttering? How are you doing with your goals for this year?

Have a great weekend!

Target Advent Calendar: Day 3!

This weekend went by so quickly!

Sometimes it feels like there just aren’t enough hours in the day. Today felt a little bit like that to me. Perhaps that is why I am typing on a laptop in a dark room just before midnight. Hoping I don’t wake a baby. Or a little dog that barks easily. That would get the other dog going, don’t cha know?

I had a list of things to accomplish. Some things were done, but they all took a little more time than expected.

Life doesn’t go the way you plan most of the time! Back to the task at hand…

The Video

Fun fact: my little dog started barking while I was filming this video and I was completely oblivious. Also, I completely forgot to say the name of the nail color. It was Twilight Twinkle. Skills– that’s what I got.

Anyway, despite not completing my list for the day, I am still hopeful. Let’s get something accomplished this week, and let’s also be realistic about it.

Did you like Day 3’s item? How are you doing? Any goals for this week?

Target Advent Calendar: Day One!

On Tuesday, I said I would start to upload videos every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until we’re caught up. I didn’t know how soon I would start Target’s 12 Days of Beauty Faves calendar. It’s today! I’m planning on making a short video for each of the 12 days.

I’m a little obsessed with the videos. My apologies for the lighting and ucky coloring in the background. Bad combination.

Also, I checked Target’s site again and they marked the calendar down to $14.99. So the price has been bouncing around. Did you like the product from Day 1? Do you think you’ll purchase this calendar?

Wishing you a cozy weekend!

p.s. I paid for this box with my own money, and my opinions are my own(especially the dorky ones.)
