Declutter Update

In the fall of last year, two friends told me that if you don’t love something, you should get rid of it. At the same time I was reading Sink Reflections by the FlyLady, Marla Cilley. She is a big advocate of decluttering. Basically she tells you to get rid of things you don’t use, need, or love.

I was hearing and reading this, but honestly, I couldn’t comprehend doing it. Get rid of my stuff? All my stuff? Stuff that didn’t have a name, but it was mine. I would look around our home and just couldn’t think of anything to take out of it.

I knew that our house was packed to the brim. We didn’t have pathways through it, but I knew it was too full. I just didn’t know where to start.

Things are different now.

  • 3 figurines

That’s 47 items, and that brings us to a running total of 529 items that have left our home. Good!

There was so much in our house. There still is. I had to just force myself at first; and I only started because I knew it was a problem. I had known that for a long time, but it really hits you when you have a kid and realize that you have to start making room for him/her.

I started getting rid of things that were just random and useless. Then I started getting rid of some duplicate items. Now I’m letting go of things that I felt guilty about getting rid of. Letting go of the things I don’t want, use, need, and finally(though I have trouble admitting it) the things I don’t love.

Maybe I’ve become attached to some things that have no sentimentality to them. Maybe someone that holds an important place in my life gave me a gift or something they didn’t want. Maybe I think it was expensive to begin with and that alone should be reason enough to keep it. All these excuses just hold me back from a life that isn’t so complicated and cluttered. I’ve been holding myself back.

Letting go can be really hard. Whether it’s your grandfather, your cute pigs, the world’s best chiropractor, or that quilt your mom gave you. Obviously these are not all on the same playing field. I’m just saying that sometimes you have to let go and move on. Otherwise, you may be stuck in the same place for a long time.

Tell me what you think.

Are you having trouble letting go? Are you finally getting there?

Decluttering!

Aaand we’re back to the decluttering. Oh man. We went on a family trip for a wedding a couple of weeks ago and I felt like there was more in our vehicle on the trip back home than there was at the beginning of the trip. That means it’s a great time to get back to the declutter challenge. (So sorry I dropped the ball on that for the past few weeks!)

The Box

The Contents

  • cosmetic bag
  • book
  • candle
  • spatula
  • 4 dresses
  • 4 shirts
  • bathrobe
  • skirt
  • sweater
  • 2 pairs of socks
  • winter hat
  • scarf
  • gloves

I usually don’t list off the different types of clothing, but I wanted the list to look longer so I’d feel better about myself. It seems to be working. 20 items this week- pretty good. That brings the total to 347 items.

I’m going to be positive here- that’s 347 items that are no longer in my home. You know what? It has been over a month since I’ve posted on this challenge. That’s a month with no declutter boxes, and still I’ve managed to purge 347 items from our house. That is A LOT of stuff!

Okay, now for a little reality check. My goal is 1,200 items by the end of the year. Must keep moving…

How are you doing? Did you get rid of a lot of stuff recently? If you did- congratulations!

Declutter Challenge Update

Have you been eyeing some dusty items and thinking,”Why do I still have this?” Me too!

This week’s box had a little help from DH. Yay! It’s always encouraging when your family joins you in clearing out. Yup.

This week’s box…

IMG_2195.JPG

What’s in the box?

  • skillet
  • 3 mixing bowls(nesting)

  • wine bottle opener
  • plastic food container with lid
  • travel mug
  • screwdriver set
  • 8 books
  • Bath & Body Works Smart Soap dispenser

21 items. Add that to our running total of 306 and that brings us to 327. Okay. Slow and steady is my pace. Slow and steady wins the race. I’m just going to keep saying that to myself. Eh. 🙂

How are you doing? Are you tackling a project that has been on the back burner for awhile? Great! Feeling overwhelmed by the amount of items you have in your humble abode? Just scroll back…slow and steady. It didn’t happen overnight, and it won’t get cleaned up overnight.:)

Have a great Friday!!!

Declutter Thursday!

This week at my house: widespread illness. Yes, it’s like a revolving door here. Once you think you’re better- there’s more! So maybe we can hope for better health in the new year.

I do have a box to show you today, thankfully.

Tomorrow’s Friday. Happy Friday!!!

p.s. I think I’m having pancakes for supper tomorrow night. Maybe with fruit. I used to like the fake syrup. The stuff that said “butter flavor.” Oh the shame. I still don’t mind it…

Declutter Diary and random thoughts…

It’s Thursday and that means I have a picture of a box on the floor in my living room for you! How thrilling. 🙂 It is for me actually; it means I’m getting an excessive amount of stuff out of our home.

The Box

The Contents

  • cloth book cover
  • 2 hats
  • small quilted tote
  • 2 pairs of gloves
  • 3 hangers
  • VHS tape
  • package of vitamins
  • large candle
  • small stuffed animal
  • letter opener
  • small plastic container with lid
  • mini blind cleaner
  • 3 paint brushes
  • scrub brush

  • 13 items of clothing
  • 30 paperback books

That is…66 items. Sweet. That makes a grand total of 165 items I have removed from our home in just 4 weeks! It’s encouraging. That’s good because there’s plenty more to be removed if I want to hit my goal of 1200!

RANDOM THOUGHTS

Sorry for the slow down here on the blog(also with our videos)- Beks is a busy person. I don’t have such a good excuse. Our laptop fell the other day and keeps trying to reboot/repair. Imagine a sad face here. Oh well. This stuff happens to everyone. I’m working on getting it fixed, but it’s going slowly.

We took the Little One sledding a few days ago. I think she enjoyed it. We did too.

DH with DD. Don’t know where the dog came from. 🙂

Our dog isn’t that old, she just likes to shove her nose deep in the snow. She really loves snow. We think something may be wrong with her.

Earlier this week, one of our African geese was attacked by a weasel. I was pretty upset about it and, of course, the geese were very upset about it. The weasel is MIA and I’m worried it will happen again. I have taken measures to keep the geese safe, but they are not the only animals we have that could potentially become prey.

Did you know that a weasel can get through an opening the size of a quarter? Our geese are quite large, probably between 12 and 16 pounds. That’s one ambitious weasel.

How do I know it was a weasel? Funny you should ask…I walked in on it attacking the goose. I think I surprised it by turning the light on. I know I surprised it when I started shouting at it and smashing a milk jug full of water against the wall in an attempt to scare it off. Seems silly, but it did work.

We have set a live trap for the weasel. In case you’re not familiar with live traps, it will not kill the animal it traps. In case you’re not familiar with weasels(I wasn’t), they are notoriously elusive.

Well, that wraps it up for now. How is your week going? Any goals you’re working on? Got a solution for weasels?

Have a great Friday!

Declutter Diary

It’s Thursday. That means I show you a picture of a box full of stuff I’m donating/giving away.

Today was a long day because I went through and organized two boxes of paperwork. It was tedious but so worth it. Now they’re gone! Woohoo!

After I went through those boxes, I put together my declutter box for you to see. It’s kind of nice showing you, because I feel accountable. I’m actually decluttering because I feel like someone might notice if I stop!

The Box

IMG_2123.JPG

The Contents

  • 3 candles
  • small plastic container with lid
  • 3 pig knickknacks
  • hair clip
  • headband
  • game on CD-ROM
  • 31 books

This week’s total number of items: 41! That brings the grand total to 99 items- not bad for 3 weeks. I have decided that my former goal of getting rid of 200 items for the year is a bit silly now. So I’ve changed the number to 1,200. I feel like that’s enough to keep me moving and stay focused. I might have tried for a higher number but I think as I declutter there will be less and less to actually clear out. That’s my hope anyway!

So, how are you doing? Any particular goal that you’re working on for the year? I hope you’re making progress on it! Don’t give up!
