37 items in this box…Well, some were on the floor. 🙂 Not bad. That brings the total to 566. Only 634 more things to get out of our house!

Actually, since my goal is to hit 1200 items by the end of the year, it looks like I’m almost halfway there with my time and how much I’ve been able to get out of the house. That’s promising, right?

Are you decluttering too? Do you want to?

Declutter Update

In the fall of last year, two friends told me that if you don’t love something, you should get rid of it. At the same time I was reading Sink Reflections by the FlyLady, Marla Cilley. She is a big advocate of decluttering. Basically she tells you to get rid of things you don’t use, need, or love.

I was hearing and reading this, but honestly, I couldn’t comprehend doing it. Get rid of my stuff? All my stuff? Stuff that didn’t have a name, but it was mine. I would look around our home and just couldn’t think of anything to take out of it.

I knew that our house was packed to the brim. We didn’t have pathways through it, but I knew it was too full. I just didn’t know where to start.

Things are different now.

That’s 47 items, and that brings us to a running total of 529 items that have left our home. Good!

There was so much in our house. There still is. I had to just force myself at first; and I only started because I knew it was a problem. I had known that for a long time, but it really hits you when you have a kid and realize that you have to start making room for him/her.

I started getting rid of things that were just random and useless. Then I started getting rid of some duplicate items. Now I’m letting go of things that I felt guilty about getting rid of. Letting go of the things I don’t want, use, need, and finally(though I have trouble admitting it) the things I don’t love.

Maybe I’ve become attached to some things that have no sentimentality to them. Maybe someone that holds an important place in my life gave me a gift or something they didn’t want. Maybe I think it was expensive to begin with and that alone should be reason enough to keep it. All these excuses just hold me back from a life that isn’t so complicated and cluttered. I’ve been holding myself back.

Letting go can be really hard. Whether it’s your grandfather, your cute pigs, the world’s best chiropractor, or that quilt your mom gave you. Obviously these are not all on the same playing field. I’m just saying that sometimes you have to let go and move on. Otherwise, you may be stuck in the same place for a long time.

Tell me what you think.

Are you having trouble letting go? Are you finally getting there?

Goodbye Clutter!

Okay, not all the clutter is gone- but I’m working on it! Oh how good it feels to donate to the thrift stores.

Although… it could be said that it’s not an entirely selfless act on my part. I definitely relish that moment when I get to walk away from those bags/boxes packed with things that used to take up precious real estate in my home. It’s an almost giddy feeling.

The more I declutter, the more I feel like I was a hoarder. I didn’t have pathways through our house, but there were issues that were popping up.

Have you ever heard,” A place for everything and everything in its place?” Well, more and more frequently I would find myself trying to clear off the kitchen table or picking up in the living room, and I would realize that I had no idea where to put something. Things were coming into our home at a steady pace, but there wasn’t any available space for them. And nothing was leaving…

Thankfully, that set off some warning bells. And now I am accountable through this declutter challenge. It’s making a difference.

Okay, enough of that.

Declutter Thursday…on a Friday

Spring is a busy time of year. So much to do inside and even more waiting for you outside. I kind of cleaned my fridge out yesterday, but only half way. My toddler was taking a nap while I attempted the job, but woke up and wanted some attention. And the weather was nice. So that was the end of that!

I am quite happy with this week’s box because my DH contributed to it as well. That’s encouraging!

The Box

60 things in the box(es) this week- bringing the running total to 407! Great! I’m about a third of the way to my goal. I can do this!

How are you doing? Are you just starting to declutter or are you just in “maintenance mode” now?

Happy Friday!

Decluttering!

Aaand we’re back to the decluttering. Oh man. We went on a family trip for a wedding a couple of weeks ago and I felt like there was more in our vehicle on the trip back home than there was at the beginning of the trip. That means it’s a great time to get back to the declutter challenge. (So sorry I dropped the ball on that for the past few weeks!)

The Box

The Contents

  • cosmetic bag
  • book
  • candle
  • spatula
  • 4 dresses
  • 4 shirts
  • bathrobe
  • skirt
  • sweater
  • 2 pairs of socks
  • winter hat
  • scarf
  • gloves

I usually don’t list off the different types of clothing, but I wanted the list to look longer so I’d feel better about myself. It seems to be working. 20 items this week- pretty good. That brings the total to 347 items.

I’m going to be positive here- that’s 347 items that are no longer in my home. You know what? It has been over a month since I’ve posted on this challenge. That’s a month with no declutter boxes, and still I’ve managed to purge 347 items from our house. That is A LOT of stuff!

Okay, now for a little reality check. My goal is 1,200 items by the end of the year. Must keep moving…

How are you doing? Did you get rid of a lot of stuff recently? If you did- congratulations!

Decluttering Thursday

What a busy week! I hope everyone has made it safely through Winter Storm Stella. It was really windy here and, of course, there was a good amount of snow.

This week’s box is small in number, but I feel good that I’m letting go of some things that I “had to have.” Only a couple of the items fell into that category, but since I feel that I could be called a borderline hoarder(maybe)- it feels good!

The Box

IMG_2189.JPG

The Contents

  • old lard bucket(heehee)
  • Nalgene water bottle
  • 2 large piggy banks
  • trivet
  • slate welcome sign
  • small markerboard(not the same as last week’s markerboard)
  • 4 cookbooks
  • drinking glass

That is 12 items. Eh. Not so great this week. Better than nothing, but could be better.

Okay, that brings the grand total to 306 items out of our home! Nice to make it past the 300 mark. Still, I need to crack down on this stuff if I want to make my goal.

How are you doing with your decluttering? Any victories? Are you having a lackluster week like me?

Let’s try for a better box next week! We can do this. 🙂

Declutter Challenge Update

Kickin’ the collecting habit one box at a time! My box seems small this week, but the important thing is that I have a box to show you. I didn’t just ignore the elephant in the room. The elephant being this whole challenge thingy.

I love that I’m posting all this decluttering stuff. I know probably some people skip right over this post- and I can’t blame them. Especially if they don’t have a problem with keeping everything. This is a little bland for people that are naturally organized. But for those of us that struggle with collecting and organizing, this might be just the right kind of encouragement! It certainly is for me.

Let’s see this box.IMG_2180.JPGAh, yes. There it is. What’s in it?

The Contents

  • 3 balloon weights
  • 7 kitchen utensils
  • a book
  • small dry-erase board
  • 10 items of clothing
  • set of sheets

That’s it. 23 items. The grand total(so far): 294 items. Okay! We’re almost to 300. And…906 more items leaving our house will bring me to my goal. I probably shouldn’t have figured that out. A little daunting.

Are you ready to pass on the things you don’t use anymore? Remember that you don’t have to trash everything when you declutter- chances are good that someone else may enjoy or need things that you don’t enjoy or need anymore! Donate them to a thrift store, a church yard sale, or your local shelter. Sometimes it makes it easier to let these things go if you know someone else may benefit from your decluttering.

Are you feeling more organized? Are you clearing out? Doesn’t it feel good?
